Tequila Sunrise

The Tequila Sunrise is beautiful drink that is named just for that. The way the ingredients settle into the glass give off the look of a mesmerizing sunrise effect. Many patrons (and some bartenders) of today do not know that this drink actually has two recipes.

The original recipe was created by Gene Sulit in the 30’s – 40’s at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. Crème de Cassis is the denser ingredient that he used in his recipe causing the gradations in color. The more current recipe used today was altered by Bobby Lazoff and Billy Rice at the Trident Restaurant in California in the early 70’s. Grenadine Syrup is the denser ingredient that is used in their recipe to create the sunrise effect. Whichever recipe you or your customers prefer, this drink is sure to please. Both full recipes are listed below.

Original Tequila Sunrise

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz Tequila
  • Juice of ½ Lime
  • Club Soda
  • ¾ oz Crème de Cassis
  • Lime Wheel and Cherry for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Pour tequila and lime juice into Collins glass over ice.
  2. Fill with club soda.
  3. Pour Crème de Cassis into the drink. It will sink to the bottom.
  4. Garnish with lime wheel and cherry.

 

Current Tequila Sunrise

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz Orange Juice
  • 2 oz Tequila
  • ½ oz Grenadine
  • Orange Slice and Cherry for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Pour tequila and orange juice into highball glass over ice.
  2. Slowly pour grenadine around the inside edge of the glass. It will sink and slowly rise to mix naturally.
  3. Garnish with orange slice and cherry.
